An Overview
Throughout World War II, military forces from all different countries call upon the help of a variety of animals to further their cause. These animals, including dogs, pigeons, horses, and mules, had a significant impact on the war. They boosted morale, carried supplies, scouted locations, stood guard at posts, carried men, delivered messages, and fought alongside their human companions. Certain animals, such as GI Joe the pigeon, were directly responsible for saving the lives of many men. These men would not have been able to fight or go home to their families if not for the brave actions of these animals. Through their other jobs, such as delivering messages and carrying heavy supplies, these animals also indirectly saved the lives of soldiers and influenced many battles.
